Casey Cayford

Sports Therapist

When I was 17, I had a riding accident while out with my horse. My leg was crushed in the fall, leading to four major operations over the course of several weeks. The physical damage was severe, but the emotional and mental challenges that followed were just as overwhelming.

I spent the first two weeks bedbound, and in that short time, my body rapidly lost strength, mobility, and flexibility especially in my injured leg. Simple movements I once took for granted standing up, taking a few steps, even shifting position suddenly became daunting. I had to relearn everything from the ground up: how to stand, how to walk, how to manage even the most basic daily tasks.

My initial rehabilitation through the NHS left me feeling stuck. Instead of making progress, I felt myself slipping backwards. The sessions felt rushed, impersonal, and lacking the support I so desperately needed. I was frustrated, angry, and often felt invisible within the system. It wasn’t just the physical pain I was fighting, it was the deep sense of hopelessness. I felt left behind.

But over time, through sheer determination and the unwavering support of those who did care, I gradually regained my strength and independence. That journey while incredibly difficult opened my eyes to how essential proper rehabilitation and personalised care truly are. It’s not just about physical recovery; the emotional and mental support is just as critical.

That experience gave me a new sense of purpose. I didn’t want anyone else to feel as alone, unsupported, or dismissed as I had during my recovery. That’s what inspired me to go into rehabilitation myself: to become the kind of guide and support I had once needed so badly.

Today, helping people rebuild their strength, confidence, and independence is more than just a job, it’s a mission, rooted in personal experience and a deep sense of empathy.
